Do you have ophthalmology questions about your eyes, surgery or how a consultation works? Here are the answers to the questions our patients ask us most often at the practice, in Fez.
Consultations and appointments
How do I book an appointment at the practice?
By phone at 0532-023012 or 0615-557141, on WhatsApp, or via our appointment booking page. The practice is located at 1 Rue Abdelkrim Benjelloun, Espace Marina, Fez.
Do I need to come accompanied?
If pupil dilation is planned (fundus exam), your vision will be blurred for a few hours: avoid driving and come accompanied if possible.
How often should I have my eyes checked?
In the absence of problems: every 1 to 2 years from age 40, and every year for people with diabetes, contact lens wearers and after age 60. Children should be examined before school age.
Keratoconus
Can keratoconus be treated?
Yes. Depending on the stage: specialty lenses for vision, cross-linking to stop progression, intracorneal rings in some cases. The earlier it is detected, the more options there are. See our complete keratoconus guide.
Why shouldn’t you rub your eyes?
Repeated rubbing weakens the cornea and promotes the appearance and worsening of keratoconus. If your eyes itch, the allergy can be treated — see a doctor.
Refractive surgery (laser)
Am I a good candidate for LASIK?
It depends on your cornea (thickness, topography), your correction and its stability. Only a complete preoperative work-up can determine it.
Is the laser result permanent?
The correction of the treated defect is lasting in the great majority of cases. Age-related presbyopia, however, can appear after age 45 as in everyone.
Cataract
Can a cataract come back after the operation?
No. Clouding of the capsule (secondary cataract) can however occur: it is treated in a few minutes with the YAG laser, without surgery. See our cataract surgery guide.
How long does cataract surgery take?
About 15 to 20 minutes, under local anesthesia with drops, without a hospital stay.
Glaucoma and retina
Does glaucoma cause symptoms?
Most often not, for years — which is why it is called the “silent thief of sight”. Only regular screening (eye pressure, optic nerve, visual field) can detect it in time.
I have diabetes: why a fundus exam every year?
Diabetes can damage the retina without any symptom at first. Detected early, diabetic retinopathy is treated effectively (laser, injections).
Children
When should a child’s eyes be examined?
Before starting school, and earlier in case of strabismus, a drifting eye, or family history. Amblyopia (“lazy eye”) is corrected all the better when caught early, ideally before age 10.
Do screens damage children’s eyes?
Screens promote eye strain and dryness, and excess near-vision activity is associated with the progression of myopia. Regular breaks and outdoor activities are recommended.
Contact lenses and dryness
My eyes sting and water: is it serious?
It is often dry eye syndrome, very common and bothersome but treatable. An assessment helps identify the cause and tailor the treatment.
Can you wear contact lenses with keratoconus?
Yes — it is often even the best solution for vision: rigid (RGP) or scleral lenses, custom-fitted after topography.
