Recommendations & advice

Before, on the day and after: the right habits for a smooth operation and a good recovery.

A well-prepared cataract operation and a well-followed convalescence are the best guarantee of a comfortable result. Here are the practical recommendations to know, before and after the procedure.

Simple instructions to follow before and after the operation, to put all the odds in your favor.

Before the operation

  • Have your preoperative work-up: biometry, topography and OCT make it possible to calculate the implant and make the procedure safe.
  • Report your medications: blood thinners, prostate treatments (alpha-blockers such as tamsulosin), allergies and chronic illnesses (especially diabetes).
  • Stop contact lenses a few days before the measurements, as instructed, because they temporarily deform the cornea.
  • Plan the day: arrange for someone to accompany you home and follow the fasting instructions if a sedation is planned.

The day of the procedure

  • Clean eyes: come without makeup and with a clean face.
  • Comfortable clothing and, ideally, sunglasses for the journey home (the eye remains sensitive to light).
  • Follow the arrival instructions and report any new symptom (red eye, ENT infection) before the procedure.

After the operation

  • Follow the eye drops scrupulously antibiotic and anti-inflammatory, for the prescribed duration (about a month).
  • Wear the shield at night during the first week and do not rub the eye.
  • Avoid water, soap, swimming pools, hammams, dust and heavy loads for a few weeks.
  • Resume gradually your activities; driving resumes after approval, at the first check-up.

Good follow-up habits

Keep your check-up appointments (the next day, then after a few days and at a month). They check that healing is going well and that the implant is well positioned. In case of pain, significant redness or a drop in vision, contact the practice without waiting.

Do you have diabetes or are you monitored for your heart?

Report your diabetes and your cardiovascular treatments: they do not contraindicate the operation, but sometimes call for a few precautions, such as controlling blood sugar or managing blood thinners. A diabetic eye also warrants careful monitoring of the retina, before and after the procedure.

Coming from abroad?

If you live abroad and plan your surgery during a stay in Fez, plan ahead: time is needed for the work-up, the procedure, then at least one or two check-ups. Plan to stay available for a few days after the operation and avoid flying right afterwards without your surgeon’s approval.

In summary

Well prepared and well followed, the cataract journey is simple and comfortable in the great majority of cases. The key: follow the instructions, keep to the eye drops and check-ups, and contact the practice at the slightest doubt.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop my medications before the operation?

Do not stop anything on your own. Report all your medications: the surgeon and, if needed, your doctor will decide together on any adjustments.

Can I eat before the procedure?

It depends on the type of anesthesia. Follow the instructions given at the work-up: fasting is required only if a sedation is planned.

When can I wash my hair or take a shower?

Showering is possible soon, avoiding water and soap reaching the eye. Postpone washing your hair (leaning back) for a few days.

How long do the precautions last?

The strict precautions mainly concern the first few weeks. Your ophthalmologist tells you when to resume each activity normally.
