Dry eye syndrome
Itchy, burning or watery eyes? Dry eye is common and is relieved very effectively — assessment in Fez, Morocco.
Dry eye syndrome occurs when tears are insufficient or of poor quality. Very common (screens, air conditioning, age), it is bothersome day to day but is managed effectively.
What is dry eye syndrome?
The tear film protects and nourishes the surface of the eye. When it becomes unbalanced, the eye turns dry, irritated and uncomfortable. Paradoxically, a dry eye can also water in reaction.
Symptoms
- A gritty or sandy feeling in the eye
- Burning, stinging, redness
- Vision that blurs at times
- Reflex watering
- Eye strain, especially on screens
- Discomfort wearing contact lenses
Contributing factors
Screens & air conditioning
We blink less: the tear film evaporates.
Age & menopause
Tear production decreases over time.
Contact lenses & medications
Certain treatments and wearing contact lenses dry out the eye.
Management
The assessment identifies the cause for suitable treatment: artificial tears of good quality, eyelid care, longer-term treatments if needed, and a few simple rules (screen breaks, hydration, environment). The goal: genuine comfort restored.
Frequently asked questions
Is dry eye serious?
Most often no, but it can be very bothersome and, if severe, can damage the surface of the eye. An assessment allows it to be treated properly.
Why do my eyes water if they are dry?
It is a reflex: the irritated eye produces poor-quality “emergency” tears that are not enough to protect it.
Are drops enough?
They often provide good relief, but for persistent dryness, longer-term treatment and eyelid care are needed.
