Which implant to choose?
The intraocular implant permanently replaces the clouded lens. The right choice is built together with you, according to your eye, your visual needs and your lifestyle.
Once the lens is removed, the implant takes its place and focuses light onto the retina. Its power is calculated to measure thanks to the biometry performed at the work-up — it is what determines your degree of independence from glasses.
The main types of implants
Monofocal
The standardClear vision at a single distance, most often for distance. Glasses remain useful for near. Reliable and comfortable.
Covered by AMOToric
AstigmatismAlso corrects astigmatism, worthwhile when it is significant (often above one diopter). Available in monofocal as well as premium.
Corrects astigmatismMultifocal
PremiumAims to reduce dependence on glasses for distance, intermediate and near. Nighttime halos may occur, then fade with adaptation.
Fewer glassesEDOF
Depth of focusCreates an elongated focus rather than several points: smooth vision at distance and intermediate, generally with fewer halos than multifocals.
Nighttime comfortHow is the choice made?
The choice is built together with you, according to your daily priorities:
Night driving
Sensitivity to halos and headlights to anticipate.
Reading & near
Frequency of reading, sewing, fine work.
Screens
Time spent in intermediate vision (computer, phone).
Independence
Your wish to limit wearing glasses.
There is no “best” implant in absolute terms: there is the one that suits you best. The choice is made with full information, after weighing together the advantages and limits of each option.
Multifocal and EDOF implants require a cornea, retina and optic nerve in good condition. They are not suitable in the presence of certain conditions (cornea guttata, advanced glaucoma, AMD…). The work-up checks these conditions and guides toward the safest solution.
And glasses after the operation?
With a monofocalimplant, reading glasses often remain useful: this is normal and comfortable. With a multifocal or EDOFimplant, the goal is to minimize the need for glasses in daily life, with no guarantee of avoiding them completely.
Frequently asked questions
Can the implant wear out, move or be rejected?
No. The implant is made of a biocompatible material to stay in place for life. It does not wear out and does not cause rejection. Once placed, you forget about it.
Is there an implant that is “better” than the others?
Not in absolute terms. There is the one that best matches your eye and your lifestyle. A quality monofocal implant remains an excellent, very reliable solution.
Will I still need glasses after the operation?
With a monofocal implant, reading glasses often remain useful — this is normal and comfortable. Multifocal and EDOF implants aim to reduce this dependence, without always eliminating it completely.
Are “premium” implants suitable for everyone?
No. Toric, multifocal and EDOF implants require an otherwise healthy eye and realistic expectations. The preoperative work-up checks that these conditions are met.
