Cataract surgery

Regain clear vision with a quick, painless and well-controlled procedure — phacoemulsification with an implant, performed in Fez, Morocco, by Dr Hassan Oulehri.

A cataract is the progressive clouding of the lens, the eye’s natural lens. Often age-related, it gradually blurs vision — but it is treated very effectively with surgery.

What is a cataract?

CorneaClouded lens(the cataract)RetinaOpticnerve
Cross-section of the eye: the clouded lens — the cataract — scatters light and blurs vision.

The lens, normally transparent, gradually becomes opaque: light passes through less well and the image loses sharpness and contrast. Surgery consists of removing this clouded lens and replacing it with an intraocular implant that is transparent and custom-calculated, to restore clear vision.

It is now one of the most common and best-mastered procedures in the world, with excellent results in the great majority of cases.

Frequently asked questions

At what age is a cataract operated on?

There is no fixed age: surgery is performed when the visual impairment affects daily life (reading, driving, work). The maturity of the cataract and your comfort guide the decision, assessed during consultation.

Is the operation painful?

No. It is performed under local anesthesia with eye drops: the eye is numbed and the procedure is painless. It lasts about fifteen minutes, on an outpatient basis.

Can a cataract come back?

The implant does not become cloudy. A “secondary cataract” (a film over the capsule) may occur later: it is treated in a few minutes with the YAG laser, without further surgery.

When will my sight recover?

Vision often clears within the first few days, then continues to improve. See the details of postoperative recovery.

Are both eyes operated on the same day?

No: the eyes are operated on separately, a few days or weeks apart, for safety.
